Yamaha R15 : Vs Rivals

First of all, you can see the official specifications HERE

Now, coming to the rivals.
Rival No 1:

The Hero Honda Karizma has been around for over five years.
Price : it has an advantage over the R15. It is 25,000 cheaper than the Karizma and thats a lot!
Power : 16.9ps @ 7000 - Develops same power, but at lower rpm
Torque : 18.3Nm @ 6000 - The R15 is no match
Power to weight ratio : 112.6 ps per tonne
This is where the Karizma looses out

Rival no 2
The Pulsar 220

Price : it has an advantage, selling for around Rs 84,000 ex-showroom, around 13,000 less than the R15
Power : Advantage P220. Develops 20.06ps @ 8500
Torque : Advantage P220 again. Develops 19.12Nm @ 6500
Power to weight ratio : The P220 has an edge here with a 133.7 ps per tonne ratio

So, where the R15 stand? Wil paying Rs 25,000 extra over a Karizma be worth it? Yamaha says it will 140km/h with a 60kg rider. A Karizma does 125km/h true. Now, we dont know if Yamaha is talking about a 140km/h true or 140km/h speedo indicated.

We all expected a 19-20ps engine, but they have given us a 17ps one.
Only a test ride will confirm if the R15 is worth the dough...Watch out

  1. True. Spoke to one of the few who rode the bike today in Chennai. Quality is top notch.

  2. Checked out the Yamaha R-15 in Wakdewadi showroom in Pune. They are not yet giving a test ride but I had a mixed feeling! R15 is somewhat like a man with upper body of Sylvester Stallone but lower body of malnourished 4th world country. The tyres were just too skinny and spoiled the looks which could have been stunning with right sized tyres.
Engine power is 17 PS. That is a sad thing. I am unable to believe it would be faster than Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi which is about 20.5 PS.
It should have been around 22-24 PS then I would have thought about it.
One mildly encouraging statement made by the sales girl was that this is just a beginning and within next 6-8 months we will have more bikes coming which will finally exceed the performance of Good Old Yam-Doot i.e. Yamaha RD-350. I hope this is true. R-15 is not my cup of tea.

  3. Hey guys with what Scale you are comparing a 150cc bike with other 220s foolishness...............nothing more than that. come with your 150s and compare them.Every body know how bajaj makes their bikes.Copying modifying patenting and marketing - theory behind bajaj pulsars.

  4. there would be some thing in R15 , thats the reason it is being compared n people who habe not ever rode bike comments on it n comment on the company like the above , if it is true thnn also its ok any how v r getting some mean machines like the pulser's

  5. yamaha r 15 is just a suck and panic to all bike lovers ..no matter how u made this cartoon bike with international looks but in real.....a racing bike need above 200 cc ....so guyz what can u expect from 150 ccc willl it be comfortable to our pocket when it ccomes to mileage... karizma is the king u go on makin these 150 categary bikes with just a board on the headlights ans states that its a racing bike then hell and where the fckk who said dat karizma has the limit of 125 ...keep ur mouth shut zma has reached 140 very easily on a drag.....r15 may reach to it with 6 speed gear but overall the engine will burst dats y they dint try yet.......

  6. I own a R15. The bike is extremely maneuverable even so more than the pulsars and the zmas. The speeds are even more extreme. I reach 140 and still it feels like a 70 or 80 extremely stable. I read about a bunch of drag races where the Yamaha lost out big-time. All I have to say is u need a little more experience with the bike before taking it for a drag. Like raising your rpm levels and learning how to shift gears properly in response to the bike. We have all done the pulsars and zma which is a different tech all together. This is a racing bike so u needs to develop some kind of expertise before forming an opinion. Both are street bikes and have all together different though process in achieving speed and power so does the r15.This bike is unlike any bike until now. May be I will do the drag myself in 2 months. All bikes ain't the same u need to feel ones bike to perform in it. Comparing a zma and pulsar to a r15 is comparing apples to oranges. Extreme performance excelled.

  7. guys leave these nonsenses r15,karizma, p220, look my cbr 600rr 2008 its cool n it is full of surprises. test ride the machine and tell
    top speed 220km/hr
    0-100 5 sec

  8. hi all....i am waiting to get a bike ....but after reading ur comments i fear of wat to get ....is it karizma or R15....kindly guide me

    ReplyDelete
  9. well all i cud say for pulsar lovers is that u all are blindfolded idiots, take a look at the 150,180,200,220 all look the same wid some bullshit modifications here and there and talkin about the hh karizma it is good in its own segment, but look at the looks of the machine(R 15) its way better than what we've got out here in india, the zma looks same even after 5 yrs wid a lil R ont the tank and the R15 even though being a 150 cc bike is way capable of givin the zma's and pulsies their balls in their mouth,so guys think about it get a ride of the r15 and then make some decisions!!!

    enjoy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. hey vivek i dunno ur still a kid who talks abt 150 180 and on the torque of a kzma is 130 and d resililiance of 220 is 130 but who cares abt the top end d initial which matters man ,,,,signal to signal which is very essentail start readin lots of books hope u think ahead cheers t c he he he

    ReplyDelete
  11. well whoever u are,i was talkin about the looks of pulsar and not its performance gradients, personally m a pulsar hater(like it o not)coz theres nuthin new in it they all look the same and i am a person who likes diff things and hates repetition,so even if i see a pulsar 220 it doesnt make me look at it,i respect the hh karizma for its sheer reliability, look at the pulsar it has hell lot of faulty wiring ,bikes gettin into 4-5 parts( pul 200) u'd know this if u were a good reader,so start talkin sense abt abt bikes and ill appreciate!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. guys which is a better bike r15 or karizma

    ReplyDelete
  13. vivek...do a reality check dude...for 1 lakh plus a 150 cc bike is not at all a good buy..besides looks are subjective..
even then the slim rear tyre of r15 sucks...
the front fairing with the seperate wind shield is a put off..

pulsars are legendary..they changed the course of indian biking....u looking for change...pulsar is the mother of all changes...

hope that will put some sense in you

    ReplyDelete
  14. mr.ashu thanks for the idiotic info u gave us,i personally wud not mind spendin 1 lakh+ for a 150 cc machine if i get quality and trust endowed with it which yamaha is known for(im sure u dont mind agreeing on that),as for the pulsies they r better known for faulty wiring and equipment im sure u'd know this if u were a blogger
considering the tyres of r15 id like to tell u that those r engineered tubeless tyres which spread a with the weight of the rider and provide better grip and stability, the fact that it looks a bit skinny is true too
and i agree with u on front fairing
but pulsars are not at all legendary, true they changed the course of indian biking, but if pulsar is the mother of all changes then y do all pulsars look the same,
and that my friend is some sense which i already have and i guess its more and better than what u have!!!!!

  15. I bought a R15 2 weeks ago. Before this the last bike I owned was a RD350, which I sold more than 8 years ago. I am still running in the bike (raining too much in delhi!) but I can tell you the R15 feels, looks and behaves a few generations ahead of the RD! The things the RD had that the R15 cant even come close to, were the power(in a straight line as the chassis and brakes were crap compared to the "Deltabox" bikes)and the sound of the exhaust. Thats it.
Anyone who knows and loves bikes will want an R15, and he/she will not be disappointed. Guaranteed.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Stop bashing r15 guys. R125 costs around 2,50,000 in uk with same power and technology but different looks. We are just paying around 1,10,000. You are paying for technology, looks and handling where bajaj or HH cant even come close. It's actually a good value for money bike.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Guys Guys!!!! Stop talking about the Bajaj or HH, Where did the Bajaj or HH come from... We are talking about the world's no 2 Bike manufacturer, Please dont compare HH or Bajaj to YAMAHA, YAMAHA is the father of all the bike Manufacturers in india, The technology they use to manufacture is of international standards... Pulsars can no where match even RX 100 or an RX135 and we are talking about the RD 350!!!!!! Man what a bike!!! Truly legendary!!!! RD rules not the Pulsars or Karizmas!!!! Finally YAMAHA is in our hearts!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. yamaha might be the worlds 2nd largest manuf but wen it comes to india u have to look for the roads where the pits are and have to break frm 100 to 60 so choose a bike which has perfomance and braking milage , i agree that yamaha i good at bikes but i myself have got down on a drag race with yamaha r 15 but they got the power but wen u compare it with higher cc bikes be careful that they have atleast 1 bhp they win i own a pul 200 i raced with pillion rider but also then they could not come up with me in the initial and turnings if yamaha has better tyres and 200cc i would have bought it with how much it costs now i am planing for a upgrade frm entry to uper class bikes so if u can suggest some bikes of 400 cc it would be helpful thanks

  19. Comparing Spec would only show the exact different

    1. CC
(please never think higher the cc more pickup)
It is engine dynamics (piston and crack shaft movement & weight ratio)

R15 150 with forged alminium piston
most important part that boost performance with par extreme speed
this really gives the fast displacement and huge pick up
    Karizma 220
I believe all steel with higher cc gives same performance here
    Pulsar 220
i belive copied from karizma i should the same comment here too

    2. Liquid Engine
Which keeps engine really cool and power loss against heat dissipation
    This boost the performance

    3. Diasil Cylinder madeup of aluminuim
which cools faster than any metal and this reduces engine weight also

I think this contributes the most to deduce against its other bike.

    please correct i am wrong

  20. Own a R15 since august,08... Must say..a wonderful machine....was so impressed with the ride quality and high speed stability that no current bike in india can match... bought FZ16 for my younger bro...
as far as performance is concerned....well smoked all bikes around.....have done 142 myself and bike feels planted....good enough to go a notch higher too... you can easily do a 145+ on this machine...with a pillion managed 126...these are good numbers...don't think you will disagree....a wonderful piece of machine...
now eagerly waiting for ninza 250R as my next machine....

    ReplyDelete
  21. u cbr 600rr guy!!
    u call r15,ZMA,220 nonsense....
ur 600rr is nonsense in front of bikes lik hayabusa... so just shutup.. and dont bring in ur "nonsense" talk on bikes here..

    ReplyDelete
  22. hi ... i'm from indonesia...
just wanna say to all r15 riders and owners..

you all should feel lucky in india to own an r15 , here in indonesia, a local r15 called " vixion ".

it has only 14hp and top speed at 120~135 km/h.(stock , depend on rider style )
with a locked ECU we can only manage to reach 150 km/h ( semi-racing ) and about 170 km/h ( full racing ) before the engine blown out.....

our suport for r15 india , dont give up your hope,

oh yeah one other thing ....
if your bike use carb and unlimiter ECU , please don't compare it to r15.... but if you have ... then you can compare it evenly....

    thanxs....

    ReplyDelete
  23. U knw karizma is the best bike among the fuckin pulsar and the bit perfect R15.
man look at the royal look of karizma and think about that it is running over 5 years of success....

r15 is good but its back look is too fuckin.....
    so mind it!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sorry ishan

Have u ever compared looks of R15 versus Karizma...

R15 is a sports bike atleast considering for low end racing
karizma and pulsar looks to be made for family biking..

please see my previous comment about spec comparision of these bikes

also see comparison and comments at
    http://bikeadvice.in/hero-honda-karizma-vs-yamaha-r15/

I wanted to sport bike i have chosen R15.

please ride both bike at high speed.
    Speed karizma cant beat R15

    comfort riding..
I have been riding it for a while it give more confidence than any other bike
try applying brake on high speed karizma
U would fall enough more number of times than R15.
    It all about comfort riding...

    ReplyDelete
  25. hey all guyz... i can just say they all are stupids who r talkin about karizma and r15. I think you all are not truly indians man. The bajaj is one the the indian companies which is making these stylish and powerful bikes on itz own... Hero is taking techniques from Honda company from Japan. Only hero company can make either Heropuch or Hero cycles. So you Hero Honda Karizma Lovers better shut your mouth. Pulsar 220 fucks Karizma.... Pulsar rocks babe..!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well all i would like to say is that R15 is the best bike around karizma and pulsar is no match for its aerodynamic design and high pic up it gives more power at lower rpm and even looks good compared to some shit pulsar or karizma it also has a far better riding experience and much more maneuverable in traffic and round turns more than pulsar or karizma.R15 ROCKS people that bike is the best and is worth it .

    ReplyDelete
  27. well no matter what calculations n techy stuff pulsar n karizma guys put.... the r15 rules.... i hv been riding it n till now no pulsars n karizmas could beat me at 128km... they didnt even come near... as they will start shaking n will nt know when their bikes will rip offfff..... dnt pass comments blindly without riding it... if u cant afford an r15 hen respect it but dont say shit about it... no one watches a pulsar or karizma on road... r15 is a head turner n now with the new racing kit.. guys forget beating r15.... or rather buy a 600cc bike ....

    ReplyDelete
  28. guys i purchased the r15 but i have tried pulsar 220(fastest indian) and karizma but i tell u 2 go for r15 superb handeling, superb braking and the main thing superb pick up and people say that r15 does not provide good milage but my byk provides me 55km/ltr...it depends on you how u handle ur byk...yamah r15 rockzzzz...

    ReplyDelete
  29. hey guys..i'm lookin for a beast.. i'm in luv wid d r15..should i buy it or look into the new karzima zmr..guys ownin r15 plzzz suggest

    ReplyDelete
  30. Guys!! Is it safe to ride this beast at high speed which every one is boasting about...without having a leg guard???

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well that's the beauty of it that despite the leg guard r 15 is one of the safest bikes in india...

    and @ Vineet...

it's due to the guys like u with the stupid mentality of "be indian buy indian" that so many shit bikes are roaming around...come on dude be reasonable and choose the best...don't take an indian (in fact any) company for granted...we as a customer should make our own companies feel that until and unless they come up with gud quality products, we are not gonna buy it...this will help boost the competition.....today we have so many great companies from japan just due to the fact that they always had a good competition and strove for the best quality (don't forget that Soichiro HONDA was once rejected by Toyota).....

So if each and every Indian starts having this mentality of "Be Indian and buy the best"...days won't be far when we can have our own companies ruling the market not just in quantity but also in quality.......

    ReplyDelete
  32. shut the hell up you all people on this site. All are idiots. Only tongue no mind. Even a pulsar 180 can beat the nonsense r15. I have done it several times. We usually have race while coming back from college. No match to pulsar. Top end may be higher but in country like india you need lower end grunt and a reasonable top speed of 120 km/h on the highway that would be more than enough that a pulsar manages easily. In india r15 will never be able to beat any of legendary pulsars. Pulsars brought revolution to biking in India. Even countries like indonesia. Nobody will speed the r15 to 140 on indian roads to die. What does it reach 140 in like what? 40 or 50 years? The bike that races to 0 to 100 in less than 10 seconds like p220 is what i call the true bike for india!! No comparison with pulsars whatever shit you comment on this afterwards. But everyone nows Pulsars ruuuullleeeee!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Very true.. pulsars rule...

    not actually 120 km/h.
    Even a pulsar 180 can manage a top speed of 136 km/h..
have a look here.. evidence speaks..

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiQp6zm040I

Now you can imagine that if pulsar 180 can manage this speed 200 or 220 can easily manage 140+...

So, r15 is nowhere near even a low end model of pulsar..
At low end speeds and pickup again pulsars win....

    So, cheers... pulsar owners!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Pulsar 180 reaches 136 km/h that too with a pillion rider at the back..

    What more you expect ??
